Who am I

My name is Ryan and I am currently a student at California State University Northridge and I am in my final semester before receiving my Bachelors degree in English. There is not really much to say about myself. I get average grades (mostly B's) and plan to become a High School teacher (English of course) and work at the school I graduated from. I plan to eventually get a Masters degree and if I am not fed up with going to school as well as working in one I will get a Doctorate. When I have the doctorate I will decided if I want to continue teaching High School or move up to the University level.

I do not have many fears about being a teacher, beyond the usual ones. I just really hope to get the occasional student that is interested in what I say and takes something positive away from my class. That and I could probably go my whole life without being sued and come out happy.

Being a teacher was a second choice once I graduated High School. I originally went to CSUS to become a chemist but gave up when I failed the first year of basic college chemistry. I realized it was something that I didn't want to spend the rest of my life doing. So I took up my favorite subject, Literature, and took the best course of action relating to it (I had toyed with being a teacher throughout JHS and HS).

How you were going to be a chemistry anything is beyond me! I for the life of me couldnt do anything remotely related to a science so i would never contemplate something so loony unless it was a death wish. I applaud your effort though. The good thing is you realized that it was not the thing for you early on. There are too many people out there that have an epiphany thats career related just they are about to graduate. It would suck to be in their shoes. I still cant believe sometimes that there are other people out there that share a love for litereature, because anyone i speak to that is not an English major or something along the lines of that, completely hates literature. So to be in a class with people who share that interest is amazing. Now lets just hope that our students feel the same way once they have taken a class with us. Well keep up the good work.

Ha! A Doctorate! I am so scared of my Masters thesis that I could never even consider anything past (maybe when I'm through the Masters program, but only after that). How are you so confident? THE WRITING!!! There's going to be so much of it!

I have to admit that I kind of laughed when I read about your little adventure in chemistry- you don't usually meet an English major that converted from something as difficult as the sciences. I sure know that I decided to become an English major for a reason! But I'm a little jealous of you for having that option to take a different path because I know that my science and math grades, and my interest in those two subjects, didn't point me down the path of mathematician or chemist (which is too bad, because the more I watch CSI the more I think it would be cool to have that kind of job... oh by the way, I’m a dork). Well, have a good rest of the semester!

A chemist, where you going to invent the Ninja-O's cereal and transform everyone into ninja machines. My two young ones would love that, since they eat Honey Nut Cherrios and think some day they will become a bee and work in the bee hive.

Ryan you are about to complete an education you enjoyed and look forward to teaching your passion in literature. Your future students will be fortunate to have someone who can share their love for literature. There are not too many people who can do this job. Maybe the chemistry teacher might need a substitute one day and you can fill in and remind yourself you made the right choice with literature.
